{Day Seven} 31 Days of Charlotte Mason: Education is an Atmosphere, a Discipline, a Life
Education is a discipline—that is, the discipline of the good habits in which the child is trained. Education is a life, nourished upon ideas; and education is an atmosphere—that is, the child breathes the atmosphere emanating from his parents; that of the ideas which rule their own lives.
Charlotte Mason, Volume Two
When we say that "education is an atmosphere," we do not mean that a child should be isolated in what may be called a 'child-environment' especially adapted and prepared, but that we should take into account the educational value of his natural home atmosphere, both as regards persons and things, and should let him live freely among his proper conditions. It stultifies a child to bring down his world to the child's level. -Charlotte Mason
Sometimes we learn at the library.
Sometimes we learn at the local Christian University.
Sometimes we take our learning outdoors at local parks.
By "education is a discipline," we mean the discipline of habits, formed definitely and thoughtfully, whether habits of mind or body. -Charlotte Mason
We share devotionals together.
We read from God's Word.
We study and explore many subjects.
In saying that "education is a life," the need of intellectual and moral as well as of physical sustenance is implied. The mind feeds on ideas, and therefore children should have a generous curriculum. -Charlotte Mason
We learn in God's creation.
We learn at home.
We learn in community.
How has Charlotte Mason's philosophies influenced your own homeschooling?
Many blessings from our home to yours!
